History of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church

It was on March 17, 1891 that Mary E. Culbertson conveyed a tract of land located on Decoursey Pike in Kenton County Kentucky to Lucian B. Coleman, Nicholas Shuster, and Robert N Martin as trustees of The Methodist Episcopal Church South for the sum of $100. The church had previously been located on Mills Road in Kenton County.

In 1939, the unification of The Methodist Episcopal Church, The Methodist Episcopal Church South and The Methodist Protestant Church created The Methodist Church. In 1968, The Evangelical United Brethren Church , a church with a German Methodist background, and The Methodist Church had reconciled differences and the uniting of these two bodies formed The United Methodist Church.

Prior to 1953, Pleasant Grove shared the minister's time with another Methodist Church to form a two-point charge called a "circuit". At the 1953 session of The Kentucky Annual Conference, Pleasant Grove became a full-time appointment, thus necessitating the construction of a parsonage in which the minister would live.

By 1958, the church was outgrowing its facilities and an educational unit was added to the existing structure. The new addition contained classrooms, a kitchen and restrooms. The cost of the construction was paid in full in December of 1963.

In 1965 a building committee was appointed to formulate plans for constructing a new sanctuary. The committee consisted of Harold Buxton(Chairperson), Mrs. I.J. Cortright, Grant Dibert, Finley Isaacs, Jr., Wendell Jackson, Edwin Miller, Mrs. T.S. Moffett, John A. Rich, Fred Welzel, and Rev. J. B. Harmon. On April 23, 1967 a church conference was held and the congregation voted unanimously to accept their plans and build the new structure.

The last service was held in the old church on July 2, 1957. During the interim, services were held in the Ryland Heights Elementary School. On July 23, 1967 a groundbreaking for the new building was held. Dr. Homer Moore, Superintendent of the Covington District and Rev. J.B. Harmon officiated.

In less than twelve months the building was completed and the first service was held on March 3, 1968. The debt was liquidated in the fall of 1970. The dedication and the burning of the mortgage was held on March 14, 1971.

On January 1974 a new addition to the parsonage was dedicated. In 1983 a new gables roof was constructed over the present Education Building.

The big undertaking of raising the roof of the parsonage, thuse creating three upstairs rooms, a full bath, and additional closets commenced by Bill Schick and Harold Sterneberg and was completed in 1997. Accomodations were made for persons with disabilities in 1998 with the addition of a wheelchair ramp and a 1st floor lavatory connected to the foyer.
